Hever Castle

Located in Kent, England, Hever Castle is a spectacular 13th-century country mansion renowned as the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s ill-fated second wife. Originally constructed as a moated farmhouse in 1270, the estate was transformed into a fortified castle by the de Hever family and later expanded into a Tudor residence by the Boleyns.

The castle’s rich interior features magnificent Tudor panelling, rare historic portraits, and personal prayer books belonging to Anne Boleyn herself. Following the fall of the Boleyn family, the estate eventually passed to Henry’s fourth wife, Anne of Cleves.

By the 19th century, the castle had fallen into disrepair. However, it was saved in 1903 by American millionaire William Waldorf Astor, who poured his immense wealth into a meticulous restoration. Astor expanded the estate by building the charming “Tudor Village” guest wing and designing the spectacular 125-acre grounds. Today, visitors can explore these award-winning gardens, which include an Italian garden filled with Roman antiquities, a giant yew maze, a water maze, and a pristine 38-acre lake.

A Royal Retreat: Our Luxury Stay at Hever Castle

This was an absolutely fabulous stay;

we couldn’t fault a single thing. From the moment we stepped onto the timeless estate of Hever Castle, we were treated to an impeccable blend of history, breathtaking landscapes, and pure luxury that far exceeded our expectations.

Arriving at 11:30 AM, we received complimentary castle and grounds vouchers valid for both arrival and departure days—a massive perk included in the B&B price. We enjoyed a self-guided tour of the castle, a fascinating £3 behind-the-scenes tour, a serene lake boat ride, and a wander through the stunning gardens.

Our room was gorgeous and spacious, featuring a massive, comfy bed and a modern bathroom stocked with luxury Molton & Brown toiletries. Since the local pub stopped serving food at 5:00 PM on Sunday, we had a peaceful courtyard picnic before relaxing on the comfortable sofas in the guest lounge.

The highlight was waking up at 7:00 AM for an exclusive walk. Wandering the grounds before the public arrived felt truly special. We explored new garden areas and discovered the historic churchyard containing the graves of Anne Boleyn’s grandfather and television presenter Caron Keating.

After a lovely breakfast served by wonderfully polite staff, we concluded that at £215, the room is amazing value. Highly recommended!
