The atlas mountains

"Exciting, rural and as real as it gets…"

We had a little gap towards the back end of the year, and a little holiday budget left so Cola found this little gem. An 8 bedroom Riad hotel in the Atlas Mountains. We screwed up thinking it would be hoy. Boy we were wrong, when the sun went down it was low single figure temperatures. Brrrrrrr

Morocco, officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is a North African country with a rich and diverse history and culture. Situated at the crossroads of Africa and Europe, it boasts coastlines on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, and shares borders with Algeria and the disputed territory of Western Sahara. Its strategic location has made it a significant player in regional and international affairs. The country’s terrain varies from mountainous regions like the Atlas Mountains to vast desert areas.

Moroccan culture is a blend of Arab, Berber, African, and European influences. The official languages are Arabic and Tamazight (Berber), with French also widely spoken. Islam is the predominant religion. Morocco has a diversified economy with key sectors including agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. Tourism is a major contributor, attracting visitors with its historic cities, vibrant markets, and stunning landscapes.

Morocco has a long and complex history, with ancient roots and a succession of dynasties. It gained independence from France in 1956. The country has a monarchy, and the current King plays a significant role in the countries governance. Rabat is the capital city, Casablanca is the largest city and a major economic hub, and Marrakech and Fez are renowned for their historical and cultural significance. Morocco is a country of contrasts, offering a unique blend of tradition and modernity.

We messed up on this one.  We kept looking at the temperatures in Marrakesh (which was average 29°C – Lovely) BUT… The Imlil Berber village in the mountains were 10-15°C lower and dropping to low single figures over night.  The shorts and t-shirts were left in the case and an extra blanket at night. Amazing place, but like going back in time.  We saw the real Morocco and definitely worth a visit. If we were a little younger we would have climbed Mount Toubkal (even if has some sad history)
