Gibraltar is a unique British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. Covering just 6.8 square kilometers, it shares a land border with Spain to the north and guards the critical Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow entry point connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.

The territory’s landscape is famously dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, a towering limestone promontory that rises 426 meters above sea level. This Upper Rock area is a protected nature reserve home to roughly 300 Barbary macaques, which are famously the only wild monkey population in Europe.

Historically a prized military stronghold, Gibraltar’s name derives from the Arabic Jabal Tariq (“Mount of Tariq”), marking the 711 AD Umayyad conquest. It was captured by an Anglo-Dutch force in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession and formally ceded to Great Britain “in perpetuity” under the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht. Today, Gibraltar is a self-governing, highly dense urban economy. While English is the official language, most locals are bilingual in Spanish or speak Llanito, a unique local vernacular blending elements of both languages.
