Belle Tout Lighthouse, a decommissioned lighthouse perched atop the dramatic white cliffs of Beachy Head in East Sussex, is a captivating landmark with a rich history. Built in 1832, it served as a navigational aid until 1902, when it was replaced by the Beachy Head Lighthouse due to its vulnerability to sea mists.
Belle Tout’s unique location and striking appearance have made it a popular subject for film and television, notably featuring in the James Bond film “The Living Daylights.” In 1999, the entire structure was moved inland to protect it from coastal erosion, a testament to the efforts to preserve this iconic building. Today, Belle Tout operates as a bed and breakfast, offering guests a truly unique stay with breath-taking views of the English Channel
My husband and I stayed here for our wedding anniversary as we like to stay in unusual places and the Belle Tout
Lighthouse does not disappoint.
We were greeted by Julie who was extremely welcoming. We had the Keeper’s Loft which is really quirky and you do need to be fairly able bodied to climb the ladder up to bed. We really loved this experience.
At 5pm there are drinks and nibbles in the lounge area – what an absolutely great idea. It’s an opportunity to meet other guests and Julie and lan (depending who is on duty) joined us and we were able to ask lots of questions.
We had dinner out one night but the second night we took a picnic up to the Lantern Room and watched the sun go down – it was an absolute treat.
lan cooked breakfast for us both days and it was one of the best I think I have ever had. There is a special each day too.
Gemma assisted in the kitchen and she was really lovely too.
I have to say, I have stayed in a lot of places and this B&B was by far the friendliest and most welcoming. We don’t normally go back to the same place twice but we both feel we would like to return and see what it is like in the winter. This experience completely lived up to my expectations and we would really like to thank the staff for making it truly such a great experience.
A little disappointing, the staff seemed a little confused and kept asking what we wanted to order from the menu, even though we had pre-ordered
The food lacked a little pizazz and was a little greasy. Also Rooster has a desert with consisted of what looked like a deep fried pie filled rubbery cheese. Couldn’t get past that sorry…. Would not go back
